Te mapa
Nikopol follows the right bank of the Dnipro in southern Ukraine. The city runs as a long band beside the water, with an older centre near the river and later Soviet-era districts pushed inland in large rectangular blocks. Railway lines and the tracks and yards of heavy industry take up much of the eastern side. The steppe, lined with field shelterbelts, begins almost at the city limits.
The city has long been tied to manganese. The ore deposits nearby supplied ferroalloy plants that shaped both the economy and the layout of the town. For decades the city faced the broad Kakhovka Reservoir. After the dam was destroyed in 2023 the water fell away, leaving an exposed bed of channels and islands where the river is slowly finding its old course.
A Nikopol map poster captures that shoreline, a line that has moved within living memory. It also captures the plain structure of a working city built for plants and the people who staffed them. In monochrome, the river edge becomes the dominant stroke and the residential grid a steady field behind it.
The riverbank sets the whole direction of the city. Streets run parallel to it or drop toward the water, and the settlement stretches for kilometres along one side.
Large plant sites, rail spurs and yards form broad, coarse shapes on the map. They look very different from the fine grain of the housing districts.
Across from the city lies the bed of the Kakhovka Reservoir, where the water once stretched for kilometres. Today the map shows a much narrower river there.
