Naaldwijk is the main town of the Westland, the horticultural area between The Hague, Rotterdam and the North Sea coast. From above, the landscape is remarkable. The old centre, with its church and market square, sits inside a very large expanse of greenhouses, laid out in long rectangles that cover nearly every piece of open land.
The Westland is one of the most intensive greenhouse regions in the world, growing vegetables, flowers and plants for export. Between the glasshouses, drainage ditches and narrow roads run in straight lines, and they give the whole area a strict, repeated geometry.
