Nagykőrös lies on the Great Hungarian Plain in Pest County, south-east of Budapest. Like many towns of the region, it developed as an agricultural market centre, and its map shows a broad, spacious layout: a large central square, streets radiating toward the edges, and farmland that extends in every direction, dotted with the scattered homesteads known as tanya.
The town is well known for vegetables, particularly pickled cucumbers, which have long been processed here. It also has a literary connection: the poet János Arany taught at the local Reformed grammar school in the 1850s.
