Te mapa
Nakanojō covers a large, mostly mountainous area in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture. On a map the settled land is narrow: the town centre and its neighbourhoods follow the valley of the Agatsuma River and the smaller streams that feed it, while wooded hills rise on every side. Roads and a railway line keep to the valley floor, so the street network reads as a long, winding band.
Within the town's boundaries lies Shima Onsen, a hot spring village strung along a narrow river valley to the north and known for its old wooden inns. Nakanojō has also become associated with contemporary art through a biennale that places installations in empty buildings and around the town, drawing visitors to a place that is otherwise quiet for much of the year.
A Nakanojō map poster makes the terrain legible through what is absent. Where the slopes are too steep to build on, the paper stays blank, and the lines of roads and houses gather where the rivers have cut level ground. The result is a map that shows, without any shading, how a mountain community fits itself into its landscape.
The main valley carries the river, the railway and the principal roads side by side, forming the spine of the print from which smaller side valleys branch off into the hills.
Further north, a thin line of buildings follows a mountain stream deep into the hills. This is the hot spring village of Shima Onsen and its riverside inns.
Steep forested slopes fill much of the frame. In black and white they read as open paper, which makes the narrow settled strips along the rivers stand out all the more.

Koteā ko Nakanojō
For anyone who has soaked at Shima Onsen or spent time in the Gunma mountains, this map is a reminder of a slower rhythm. Its sparse composition suits minimalist rooms, and the winding valleys give the print a natural sense of movement from corner to corner.
