Nakatsugawa lies in the southeast of Gifu Prefecture, in a valley at the foot of Mount Ena. From above, the town follows the valley floor, with streets and railway lines running along the river terraces and the land rising steeply on both sides. The Kiso River passes to the northwest, and forested mountains fill much of the surrounding area.
The city lies on the Nakasendo, the historic inland route between Edo and Kyoto. Nakatsugawa-juku was one of its post towns, and the preserved post town of Magome, now within the city boundaries, is among the best-known stops on the old road. The novelist Shimazaki Tōson was born in Magome and wrote about it in his work.
A Nakatsugawa map poster shows a town defined by valleys and routes: the old highway, the modern rail line and the river, all threading through the mountains. In black and white the contrast between the narrow valley and the empty, rugged slopes around it is especially clear.

Mount Ena rises to the east of the town. Its slopes fill a large part of the wider map with open, empty terrain framing the valley.
The Kiso River flows past the northwest of the city through a deep valley. It carries the main line of water across the poster.

Koteā ko Nakatsugawa
Nakatsugawa appeals to walkers of the Nakasendo, readers of Tōson and people who grew up in the Kiso valley. The poster records a road, a river and a mountain in a single restrained image.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with the date you walked from Magome. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
