Te mapa
Ichinomiya lies in the northwest of Aichi Prefecture, on the Nōbi Plain between Nagoya and Gifu. The land is almost entirely flat, and from above the city appears as a continuous fabric of small streets, houses and scattered workshops, interspersed with rice fields. To the north and west, the Kiso River forms the border with Gifu, its wide bed filled with sandbanks and channels.
The city's name comes from Masumida Shrine, the highest-ranking shrine of the old Owari Province, known as its ichinomiya. The town grew around it. Ichinomiya later became a centre of the Bishū textile industry, known for wool fabrics, and its Tanabata festival each summer is one of the largest in the region.
A Ichinomiya map poster shows how evenly the city fills the plain. There is no single dominant grid, but a network of lanes, rail lines and canals that has grown organically over time. The broad curve of the Kiso River at the edge provides a strong natural frame, and green patches of farmland break up the dense pattern.
