Te mapa
Nantan is a city in the middle of Kyoto Prefecture, created in 2006 by merging the towns of Sonobe, Yagi, Hiyoshi and Miyama. It covers a large, mostly mountainous area, and its population is spread among these former towns and many small villages. On a map it looks less like one city than a network of settlements connected by river valleys and mountain roads.
Sonobe and Yagi, in the south, sit in relatively open basins with compact centres and nearby farmland. Further north the valleys narrow and the forest takes over. In Miyama, a village of traditional thatched-roof farmhouses has been preserved and is one of the best-known rural landscapes in the Kyoto region. Rivers and reservoirs, including the lake behind the dam at Hiyoshi, link the landscape together.
A Nantan map poster shows mountain terrain through the thin lines of the roads and streams that follow it. Where valleys meet, the lines gather into small towns, and in between is the open, quiet space of the forested hills. It is a spacious composition, especially good at larger sizes.
The main settlements sit on valley floors and in small basins, their compact street patterns appearing as knots where roads and rivers come together.
Miyama's cluster of thatched farmhouses sits beside a river valley in the north of the city, a small group of buildings surrounded by fields and forest.
The dam at Hiyoshi holds back a long, branching lake whose outline follows the folds of the surrounding valleys, a distinctive shape on the map.

Koteā ko Nantan
Nantan appeals to people who love rural Japan: hikers, visitors to Miyama and those with family in the mountains north of Kyoto. The title and subtitle can name a single village or the whole city, with the coordinates line marking a particular valley.
