Te mapa
Toyonaka lies just north of Osaka city, and from above it reads as almost continuous urban fabric: fine residential streets, rail lines running north from Umeda, and a scatter of parks and ponds. Its western edge is marked by the long runways of Osaka International Airport, known as Itami, which straddles the city boundary, while the north rises gently into the planned hills of Senri New Town.
Much of Toyonaka developed as a commuter suburb in the twentieth century, following the Hankyu railway north out of Osaka. The city also has an unexpected place in sporting history: the first national high school baseball tournament, the event that later moved to Koshien Stadium, was played at the Toyonaka ground in 1915.
A Toyonaka map poster shows how finely grained a Japanese suburb can be, with thousands of small streets fitted between larger structures. The rectangle of the airport, the green expanse of Hattori Ryokuchi Park and the curving roads of the Senri hills give the composition its landmarks, and the rail lines tie it all back to central Osaka.
The long runways of Osaka International Airport cut across the western side of the city, forming the largest clean geometric shape on the map.
A large park in the middle of the city, with woods, ponds and an open-air museum of traditional farmhouses, it appears as a broad calm space within the dense streets.
In the north, the planned neighbourhoods of Senri New Town follow the contours of low hills, their curving roads contrasting with the tight grid of the older districts.

Koteā ko Toyonaka
Toyonaka is where many Osaka families actually live, study and raise children, so a map of it is often more personal than one of the city centre. It suits anyone who grew up near the airport or the Senri hills, or who spent student years in the area.
