Te mapa
Takatsuki stretches from the flat banks of the Yodo River in the south to the wooded hills of northern Osaka Prefecture, and the map shows that change clearly. The southern half is a dense urban plain crossed by the JR and Hankyu railways and the Meishin Expressway. To the north, the city thins into valleys, farmland and forest that reach toward the Kyoto border.
Its position between Osaka and Kyoto has shaped the city for centuries. It began as a stop on the old roads between the two and is now a commuter city with fast rail links to both. Takatsuki Castle, held in the late sixteenth century by the Christian lord Takayama Ukon, once stood near today's centre. Little of it remains, and the site is now a park.
The area has many ancient burial mounds. The Imashirozuka kofun is a large keyhole-shaped tomb from the sixth century, widely thought to be the true tomb of Emperor Keitai, and it has been restored as a public park. A Takatsuki map poster shows the city's gradual rise from river plain to hills in a single frame.
The broad river and its embankments form the southern boundary. This wide, calm band separates Takatsuki from the cities on the opposite bank.
The JR and Hankyu lines run side by side through the heart of the city. Dense streets and station districts gather along them like beads on a string.
Above the urban plain, the land rises into forested ridges and narrow valleys. Roads follow the streams, and small villages sit among the fields.
