Te mapa
Nantong lies on the north bank of the Yangtze close to its estuary, where the river spreads to many kilometres wide on its way to the East China Sea. The map is dominated by that broad expanse of water to the south, with the city spread across the flat delta plain behind it, cut by canals, channels and long straight roads.
At the centre, the old town is enclosed by the Hao River, a former moat that loops around it and still gives the core a distinct, island-like outline. South of the city the Langshan hills rise abruptly beside the river, a rare piece of high ground on the plain. Long bridges now cross the Yangtze toward Suzhou and on to Shanghai, tying the city to the southern shore.
Nantong was shaped in the early twentieth century by the industrialist and reformer Zhang Jian, who founded factories, schools and a museum here, and it is sometimes called China's first modern city. The Sutong Bridge had the longest cable-stayed span in the world when it opened in 2008. A Nantong map poster brings the moat, the hills and the great river into one plan.
The old moat encircles the historic centre in an irregular loop, lined with parks and walkways, and frames the oldest streets like an inner ring.
A small group of hills standing beside the Yangtze on the southern edge of the city, forming a sudden break in the otherwise flat delta landscape.
The river here is so wide that on a city-scale map it reads almost as open sea, filling the southern part of the sheet with calm space.

Koteā ko Nantong
Nantong's shape is simple and strong: a ringed centre, a flat plain and a river that dwarfs everything around it. The print makes an unusual gift for someone from Jiangsu, or a quiet reminder of years spent working in the city's shipyards and factories.
