Te mapa
Taicang lies in the south-east of Jiangsu province, on the southern shore of the Yangtze where the river widens into its estuary. It is a county-level city under Suzhou and borders Shanghai. From above, it shows the classic landscape of the Yangtze delta: flat land divided by canals and small rivers, fields in neat strips and a town centre organised around waterways.
In the early fifteenth century the port of Liujiagang, now part of Taicang, was the starting point for the maritime expeditions of Zheng He, whose fleets sailed across the Indian Ocean. Today the port area is again a major feature on the map, with long docks along the river, and the city has become known for its large concentration of German companies.
A Taicang map poster brings together all these layers: the vast, empty band of the Yangtze, the geometric port and industrial areas, the canals threading through town and countryside, and the quiet grid of the historic centre. It is a map that rewards close looking, full of fine details worth discovering.
The wide river estuary forms the northern edge of the map, a broad, calm space against which piers and wharves stand out sharply.
Once the departure point for Zheng He's fleets, the port area now stretches along the river in large, orderly shapes of docks and terminals.
Canals and small rivers crisscross the city and farmland, forming a fine mesh typical of the Yangtze delta and a rich texture in black and white.
