Putuo Map Poster
Putuo is a district in northwestern Shanghai, west of the city centre. Its most distinctive feature from above is Suzhou Creek. The creek twists through the district in a series of tight, repeated bends, and the streets and neighbourhoods fill the curves. Putuo contains one of the longest and most winding stretches of the creek anywhere in the city.
Away from the creek, the district is organised by major roads and the elevated lines of Shanghai's ring roads, which cross it in broad strokes. Residential estates form large, regular blocks between them. Changfeng Park, with its lake, opens a wide green space in the southwest. On a Putuo map poster, the creek's winding line softens an otherwise dense, modern street network.
Putuo was once a centre of Shanghai's textile and flour mills, built along the creek for water transport. Many of those industrial buildings have been reused. The M50 art district on Moganshan Road took over old mill buildings and filled them with galleries and studios. The creek itself has been cleaned and lined with walking paths.
