Te mapa
Hongkou sits just north of the Bund, across Suzhou Creek. Its southern edge runs along the Huangpu River and the mouth of the creek, where the steel Garden Bridge, Waibaidu, has linked it to central Shanghai since 1908. Further north the district narrows into a dense mesh of streets, rail lines and the green block of Lu Xun Park.
In the early twentieth century Hongkou was a centre of literary life, and the writer Lu Xun lived and is buried there. During the Second World War, thousands of Jewish refugees from Europe lived in the Tilanqiao area. The former Ohel Moshe Synagogue now houses a museum about that period.
A Hongkou map poster zooms in on a single district, so street-level detail comes through clearly. You can pick out the curve of the creek, the waterfront wharves, lane neighbourhoods tucked behind main roads, and the park at the northern end. The result is a Shanghai map that feels closer and more personal than one of the whole city.
The creek meets the Huangpu at Hongkou's southern tip, crossed by the Garden Bridge, and marks the boundary with the Bund and central Shanghai.
A large park with a lake in the district's north, containing the writer's tomb and memorial. It forms one of the few big open spaces in the map.
The streets of the former refugee quarter form a tight grid of low buildings near the river, connected to a well-documented chapter of wartime history.

Koteā ko Hongkou
Hongkou holds personal histories for many families: Shanghainese residents, descendants of wartime refugees and people who once lived near the creek. A district map keeps those streets in sharp focus.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a family name, an address or a year, and edit the coordinates if you wish. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
