Te mapa
Nazca sits in a valley in the Ica region of southern Peru, where a river creates a narrow strip of irrigated farmland through otherwise dry desert. On a map the town forms a compact grid near the river, with the Pan-American Highway running past it and bare plains and hills stretching out on every side.
The town is known worldwide for the Nazca Lines, the vast geoglyphs of animals, plants and geometric shapes etched into the desert floor to the north, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby, the Cantalloc aqueducts, spiral stone openings leading to underground water channels, show how people here managed scarce water long ago.
A Nazca map poster reflects the sharp contrast between the green valley and the dry land around it. The regular grid of streets, the river corridor and the straight line of the highway stand out clearly against empty space. It suits anyone drawn to Peru's desert and its ancient history.
The famous geoglyphs lie on the desert plateau north of town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most studied archaeological landscapes in the Americas.
A narrow strip of irrigated land follows the river through the desert, marking the green core where the town and its farms are concentrated.
Near town, ancient underground channels with spiral stone openings still carry water, a reminder of long-standing engineering adapted to a dry climate.
