Te mapa
Nelson lies in the Pendle district of east Lancashire, in a valley between Burnley and Colne, with the long ridge of Pendle Hill to the north-west. On a map it is one of the most characteristic Lancashire textile towns: row after row of terraced houses laid out in parallel streets that climb the valley sides, with former mills and yards along the water and railway below.
The town took its name from the Lord Nelson inn, around which settlement grew during the nineteenth century as cotton weaving expanded. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the town, following the contours of the valley. In the later twentieth century Nelson gained a large South Asian community, which is now part of the everyday life of the town centre.
A Nelson map poster shows the terraces in extraordinary detail. In black and white, the parallel rows form bands of fine lines, broken by mill sites, parks and the curve of the canal. Toward the edges, the terraces give way to fields and farm tracks, and the town's shape stands out clearly against the surrounding Pennine hills.
Long parallel streets of terraced housing cover the valley sides, the densest and most regular pattern on the map and a direct record of the mill era.
The canal follows the valley through Nelson on its route across the Pennines, a smooth curving line that contrasts with the straight rows of houses.
The open country toward Pendle Hill rises north-west of town, and on a wide frame the streets fade out into fields and upland.

Koteā ko Nelson
Nelson maps are bought by people who grew up among those terraces, by families with roots in Pakistan and Kashmir who made their lives here, and by walkers who know Pendle. The street pattern tells the town's industrial story without a single label.
Choose your title, a subtitle such as a street or year, and the coordinates line. Classic black & white and Noir both suit the fine terrace pattern. The $9 pack includes six print sizes as PNG and PDF, without a watermark.
