Te mapa
Newburyport sits where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic in northeastern Massachusetts. From above the town runs along the south bank of the river. Its downtown streets angle down to the waterfront, and High Street follows a ridge above, lined with the Federal-era houses of merchants and sea captains. To the east the river opens toward the long barrier of Plum Island.
After a major fire in 1811 the commercial centre was rebuilt in brick, and that compact downtown around Market Square is still clear on the map. Newburyport was a shipbuilding town, famous for clipper ships, and it is widely cited as the birthplace of the United States Coast Guard.
A Newburyport map poster has a strong natural frame: the broad river, the marshes and the sea. The parallel streets running from High Street to the water give the town a distinctive, ladder-like pattern that looks striking in black and white.
The wide river mouth defines the northern edge of town. Bridges cross toward Salisbury and the water gives the poster a bold, open band.
High Street runs along higher ground parallel to the river, with cross streets dropping toward the harbour in a regular, ladder-like rhythm.
East of town the salt marsh and the long barrier island of Plum Island stretch along the coast, adding sweeping curves to the composition.
