Te mapa
Newton lies just west of Boston, and its outline is unusual. The Charles River curves around the city on three sides, marking much of its boundary, so from above Newton looks like a peninsula of suburban streets held inside a river bend. Inside it, the city is less one town than a set of villages, each with its own small centre.
Newton calls itself the Garden City, and its thirteen villages, including Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton and Auburndale, give the map a scattered, many-centred quality. Commonwealth Avenue crosses the city as a broad carriage road, and its rise near Boston College is Heartbreak Hill, the famous late climb of the Boston Marathon.
A Newton map poster shows this pattern well. Winding residential streets fill the gaps between village squares, the Massachusetts Turnpike and a commuter rail line cut straight through the north, and the Green Line branch runs along its own corridor. Around it all, the loops of the Charles close the composition.

This broad road crosses the city and climbs Heartbreak Hill on the Boston Marathon route, a gently curving spine through the residential streets.
Newton Centre, Auburndale, Waban and the rest each form a small cluster of streets, giving the map many centres instead of one.
