Neyveli is one of India's clearest examples of a company town. It was developed from the 1950s around the lignite deposits worked by Neyveli Lignite Corporation, now NLC India, and its map still reflects that origin. Residential areas are divided into numbered blocks, each with its own internal roads, schools and green spaces, arranged in a deliberate, spacious pattern.
Beyond the township lie the mines themselves: huge open-cast pits whose stepped edges and haul roads form large geometric shapes on the map. Thermal power stations fed by the lignite stand nearby, connected by roads, conveyors and rail sidings. The contrast between orderly housing and industrial landscape is unusually sharp.
