Thanjavur was the capital of the Chola dynasty, and its plan still shows it. The old town is organised around the palace quarter, bounded by four long Main Streets named for the cardinal directions. A short distance away, the great Brihadeeswarar Temple sits inside its own fortified enclosure and moat. Around both, the city spreads across flat, well-watered land.
The temple was completed under Rajaraja I around 1010 and is part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples. Its tower was among the tallest structures of its time. Thanjavur also lies at the heart of the Kaveri delta, often called the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, and irrigation canals and channels run through and around the city.
A Thanjavur map poster rewards a close look. The rectangle of the Main Streets, the moat around the temple fort, the Sivaganga tank and park beside it and the canals crossing the edges of town make one of the most legible historic plans in South India, and in pure black and white its geometry is especially clear.
The Brihadeeswarar Temple stands inside a fortified precinct wrapped by a moat. On the map it appears as a distinct walled rectangle, set apart from the surrounding streets.
East, West, North and South Main Streets outline the old palace town in a near-rectangle, a clear royal plan that still organises traffic and trade today.
Channels of the Kaveri irrigation system, including the Grand Anicut canal, run through and around the city, adding long curving lines to a core that is otherwise close to a grid.

Koteā ko Thanjavur
Thanjavur means something particular to those who grew up in the delta and to anyone who has stood in the temple courtyard at dusk. A map of the old town is a quiet way to honour that connection without resorting to postcards or souvenir prints.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are all editable, so you can mark a family home, a wedding or a pilgrimage date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print, framed if you like.
