Te mapa
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in southern India, and its plan still centres on a single building. The Meenakshi Amman Temple occupies the middle of the old town. Around it the streets form nested squares, and the rings of streets are named after Tamil months. Festival processions follow these streets around the temple.
The Vaigai River runs across the city from west to east. It separates the old core from the districts to the north, and several bridges cross it. Further out are the palace built by Thirumalai Nayak in the seventeenth century, the large Mariamman Teppakulam temple tank, and the hills that rise from the plain beyond the city.
A Madurai map poster turns this temple-centred plan into a strong graphic pattern. Squares sit inside squares at the heart of the map, and the river cuts across above them. Newer, looser neighbourhoods spread outward on every side. Few city maps are organised this clearly around one sacred point.
The streets around the Meenakshi Amman Temple form concentric rectangles. It is one of the most recognisable street patterns in India and the natural centre of the composition.
The river crosses the city on a broad course, often partly dry. Bridges connect the old town to the northern neighbourhoods.
The large square temple tank to the southeast has a small island shrine at its centre. On the map it is a crisp geometric shape.

Koteā ko Madurai
Madurai matters to people who grew up near its temple streets, or who travelled south and came back with the image of those rings in mind. The map holds that feeling in a way a photograph rarely does.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates, for example a family name or the date of a wedding. The poster is available in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
