Te mapa
Thoothukudi, also known as Tuticorin, lies on the Gulf of Mannar in southern Tamil Nadu. It has been a port for centuries and was long famous for pearl fishing, which earned it the name Pearl City. The land is almost completely flat. On a map the city appears as a dense core near the old harbour, surrounded by open coastal ground.
The most distinctive features on the map lie along the coast. The V. O. Chidambaranar Port, one of India's major ports, extends into the sea with long breakwaters and a sheltered basin. Large rectangular salt pans cover much of the low-lying land around the city, because Thoothukudi is one of the country's leading salt-producing areas.
Offshore, small islands belonging to the Gulf of Mannar marine protected area lie within sight of the coast. A Thoothukudi map poster frames these elements together: the grid of the older town, the port jutting out to sea, the geometric salt fields and the scattered islands. The composition is both industrial and quietly coastal.

Large grids of evaporation ponds spread across the flat land around the city. Their rectangles look almost like a second street plan.
Low islands of the Gulf of Mannar marine park lie scattered along the coast. They are small shapes that add depth to the open sea on the map.

Koteā ko Thoothukudi
Thoothukudi's port, salt fields and fishing heritage shape the lives of many families along this coast. A map of the city is a meaningful print for those who grew up there, or who now live far from the Gulf of Mannar.
