Nok Kundi sits on the wide, arid plains of Chagai District in western Balochistan, near the point where Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet. The desert around it is almost empty, so on a map the town looks like a small group of streets surrounded by open space. The town grew as a stop on the railway line that runs west from Quetta toward the Iranian border at Taftan, and it still serves travellers and freight along that route.
