Te mapa
Nowa Huta was built from 1949 as a new town beside a vast steelworks on the eastern side of Kraków, and it later became one of the city's districts. It is one of the best-known examples of socialist-realist planning. Its map still shows the original idea very clearly: a composed, symmetrical plan quite unlike the organic growth of old Kraków.
The heart of the layout is the Central Square, now named after Ronald Reagan, from which the main avenues radiate outward in a fan. Between them, residential blocks are arranged around large green courtyards, with schools and services built into each neighbourhood unit. From above, the effect is formal and geometric, almost like a diagram of an ideal town.
Beyond the housing, the steelworks spread over a huge area to the east, and the open Nowa Huta Meadows lie just south of the estates. In 1977, after a long struggle for permission to build, residents saw the Ark of the Lord church consecrated. A Nowa Huta map poster captures both the planned town and the industrial landscape around it.
The formal square sits at the southern end of the plan, and the main avenues spread northward from it like the ribs of a fan.
Wide boulevards lead outward from the square, with residential superblocks set between them. This symmetry is the district's most recognisable feature on any map.
East of the residential area, the former Lenin Steelworks fills an enormous industrial zone of rail sidings, halls and roads, on a scale that rivals the town itself.

Koteā ko Nowa Huta
Nowa Huta appeals to people interested in architecture and twentieth-century history as much as to those who grew up there. Its radial plan makes an unusually clear, graphic poster that explains the idea behind the place at a glance.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the name of an osiedle or a family date, and pick one of five styles. Blueprint suits the planned character well, and Classic black & white keeps it crisp. The $9 files cover six print sizes.
