Ohrid lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia, a lake considered one of the oldest in Europe. The town and lake together are a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognised for both natural and cultural value, and the lake's broad expanse fills much of any map of the area.
The old town occupies a hill above the water, crowned by Samuel's Fortress. Its narrow, winding lanes descend toward the shore, passing churches and the excavated site at Plaošnik, while the Church of St John at Kaneo stands on a small headland overlooking the lake. Newer districts spread across flatter land to the north and east in a more regular pattern.
