Te mapa
Ōmachi lies in the north of Nagano Prefecture, on a valley floor directly beneath the Hida Mountains, the Japanese Northern Alps. The peaks to the west are among the highest in Japan, and on the map they appear as a vast empty mass beside the compact town grid, which spreads across the flatter ground along the rivers and railway.
Ōmachi is the eastern gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which crosses the mountains toward Toyama by way of the Kurobe Dam. North of town lie the three Nishina lakes, Kizaki, Nakatsuna and Aoki, strung along the valley in a line that gives the map its most distinctive shapes. The JR Ōito Line runs north through the valley.
An Ōmachi map poster suits climbers, skiers and travellers who began their route into the Alps here, as well as those who live and work in the valley. Blueprint gives the lakes and rivers a cool clarity, while Classic black and white contrasts the town's tidy streets with the open mountainside.
Kizaki, Nakatsuna and Aoki lakes line up north of town, three elongated shapes that form the most recognisable feature of the map.
Roads lead west toward Ōgizawa, the starting point of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, climbing from the valley into the mountains.
The town centre spreads across level ground in a fairly regular pattern of streets, with the railway and rivers running through it north to south.

Koteā ko Ōmachi
Ōmachi marks the threshold between a valley town and some of Japan's highest mountains, and its map carries that tension. It makes a fine reminder of a trip along the Alpine Route or a season spent in the hills.
