Te mapa
Matsutō, usually written Mattō, lies on the broad alluvial plain of the Tedori River in Ishikawa Prefecture, south-west of Kanazawa. The ground is almost perfectly flat, and the map shows it: a town area gathered around the railway station, surrounded by rectangular paddy fields, farm roads and irrigation channels that stretch toward the coast.
Mattō was a city in its own right until 2005, when it merged with neighbouring municipalities to form Hakusan, named after the sacred mountain inland. The old town grew as a stop on the Hokuriku road. It is remembered as the birthplace of Kaga no Chiyo, the eighteenth-century haiku poet whose verse about a morning glory is still widely quoted.
A Matsutō map poster captures the quiet order of the Kaga plain: the town's denser streets and the railway set against the geometric field pattern. The main line along the Hokuriku coast runs straight through the centre, and the Sea of Japan lies a short distance to the west, giving the composition a natural edge.
Rectangular rice fields surround the town in a regular pattern of farm roads and channels. They give the outer parts of the poster a fine, almost textile-like texture.
The wide Tedori River runs from the mountains to the sea along the southern side of the area. Its broad gravel bed is drawn as a strong, open band across the map.
The older centre gathers around the railway station, where streets tighten into smaller blocks. It is the densest part of the design, surrounded by the looser lines of the plain.

Koteā ko Matsutō
Mattō rarely appears on souvenirs, which is exactly why a map of it can mean so much to someone from here. The flat fields, the rail line and the familiar station streets are recognisable at a glance, even decades after moving to a bigger city.
Keep the historical name or put Hakusan in the title, then add a subtitle, a date and the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The printed version comes on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
