Te mapa
Komatsu lies on the flat coastal plain of Ishikawa Prefecture, south-west of Kanazawa, with the Sea of Japan on one side and the foothills of the Hakusan range on the other. From above the city is fairly flat and regular. Rivers run down to the coast, and residential streets fill the space between them.
The city gave its name to Komatsu Ltd, the construction machinery maker that was founded here and remains closely linked to the area. It is also home to Komatsu Airport, which is shared with an air self-defence base. In 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to the city, bringing it onto Japan's high-speed rail network.
A Komatsu map poster brings out several strong shapes. The long straight runway lies near the coast, Lake Kiba forms a calm oval of open water to the south-west, and the Kakehashi river crosses the plain. The city's fine street grid holds these shapes together into a balanced composition.
The airport's long runway is a strong straight line near the coast, one of the most recognisable shapes on the map and a clear break from the street pattern.
A shallow lake on the south-western side of the city leaves a smooth, open area on the map, with roads and settlements tracing its shoreline.
The river crosses the plain toward the Sea of Japan, carrying bridges and dividing the city's districts as it approaches the coast.

Koteā ko Komatsu
This map suits anyone with ties to Ishikawa, people who have worked in the city's industries, or travellers who passed through on the new Shinkansen line. Its clean mix of lines and open water looks at home in a minimal interior.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, for example with a family name, a date or the city's name in Japanese. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
