Te mapa
Ōmama lies in Gunma Prefecture, in eastern Kantō, and since 2006 it has been part of the city of Midori. It stands where the Watarase River leaves the mountains and enters the plain, next to Kiryū. From above, the town spreads over the flat ground on the river terrace, and the valley upstream quickly narrows between wooded slopes.
Ōmama grew as a stop on the old road that carried copper from the Ashio mines. The Watarase Keikoku Railway still follows the river from here into the gorge. Within the same municipality lies the Iwajuku site, where finds in 1949 first proved that Japan had a Palaeolithic period.
An Ōmamachō-ōmama map poster shows a town at a threshold. Its streets form a tight pattern along the old road on the plain, and the river curves past. To the north the map empties into forested mountains, crossed only by the river, the railway and a few roads.
The river emerges from the mountains and runs past the town in a wide channel. It is the main natural line on the poster and marks the town's eastern side.
The historic route through town follows a long, straight line, with the older streets and shops strung along it at the centre of the map.
North of town, the valley narrows sharply. The railway and road squeeze along the river, and the rest of the poster turns to open mountain terrain.
