Te mapa
Orange has a feature few American cities have: a traffic circle at its historic centre. Four streets meet at the Plaza, and from above the round park and the blocks of Old Towne around it make a small, symmetric pattern inside the wider suburban grid. The neighbourhoods closest to the Plaza are filled with older bungalows on narrow lots.
The broader city follows the Southern California pattern of long, straight boulevards and curving residential streets. Several freeways meet on its western edge, where their interchanges form large loops. The Santa Ana River channel runs just beyond. To the east, the grid gives way to winding roads and larger lots in the foothills that rise toward the Santa Ana Mountains.
Chapman University sits a few blocks from the Plaza, and its campus fits neatly into the old street grid. An Orange map poster centres on the circle that people in the city simply call the Plaza, with the grid, the freeways and the hills arranged around it in clear, balanced lines.
A circular park at the meeting point of four streets, the Plaza is the centre of Old Towne and the most recognisable shape on any map of Orange.
The campus lies a short walk from the circle, its buildings and lawns set within the historic grid rather than on a separate site.
On the city's western side, large freeway interchanges create broad curves that contrast with the straight residential streets.
