Te mapa
San Juan Ostuncalco lies in the western highlands of Guatemala, in the department of Quetzaltenango, at an elevation where mornings are cool and fields climb the surrounding hills. It is a Mam-speaking area, and the town serves as a market and meeting point for villages scattered across the uplands around it.
The centre follows the pattern of many Guatemalan towns: a roughly regular grid around a central square with a church, set on the flattest ground available. Beyond it the order loosens quickly. Streets bend to follow ravines and slopes, and paths lead out through cultivated plots toward outlying communities.
An Ostuncalco map poster shows that shift from planned core to organic edge very clearly. The grid at the middle is tight and balanced, while the outer roads twist with the terrain. It is a portrait of a highland town shaped as much by its landscape as by its colonial plan.
The plaza and church sit at the heart of a compact grid, the most regular part of the map and the point from which the town's streets spread.
Outside the centre, roads curve along gullies and ridges typical of the volcanic highlands, producing long, irregular lines that break the grid.
Small clusters of streets appear around the edges of the print, communities linked to Ostuncalco by winding rural roads across the hills.
