Te mapa
Ouargla lies in a wide basin in the northern Sahara, several hundred kilometres south of the Mediterranean coast. For centuries it was an important stop on caravan routes. The city grew around its palm groves and its ksar, a fortified old town of closely packed earthen houses. On a map, those two elements are still easy to pick out within the newer city.
In modern times, Ouargla has become an administrative and service centre for the oil region in the southeast of the country, and the large Hassi Messaoud field lies not far away. This explains the wide avenues and newer districts that surround the old core. Beyond them, low ground and salt flats mark the edge of the oasis.
An Ouargla map poster shows the contrast between very different street patterns. The ksar is a knot of narrow, winding lanes. The palm groves appear as a patchwork of plots and paths. The modern city follows straight roads laid out for cars. Around it all is open desert, drawn as empty space, and that emptiness frames the settlement.
The historic fortified town is a dense cluster of small, irregular lanes. On the map it looks very different from the straight streets around it.
Irrigated gardens form a patchwork of plots around the older districts. They are the reason the city exists in the middle of the desert.
At the edges, streets end abruptly against salt flats and open sand. The empty space gives the city a sharp, clean outline on the poster.

Koteā ko Ouargla
Ouargla holds meaning for families rooted in the oasis and for the many people who have worked in the Saharan oil region. Its map is a reminder of a city that grew up around water in an extremely dry landscape.
You can add a family name, a date or a short line of text to the title and subtitle, and include the coordinates. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the desert setting without looking like a postcard.
