Te mapa
Ouro Preto is one of the least grid-like towns you could hang on a wall. It was built in the eighteenth century during the Minas Gerais gold rush and spreads along a chain of steep hills. Its streets follow the contours, twisting, doubling back and climbing between churches on the ridges and small open squares.
At the heart of the town is Praça Tiradentes, named after the leader of the 1789 Inconfidência Mineira. The former governor's palace and the old town hall face each other across the square. Ouro Preto was the capital of Minas Gerais until 1897, when the state government moved to the newly planned city of Belo Horizonte.
Its baroque churches, several of them associated with the sculptor Aleijadinho, and its intact colonial fabric led UNESCO to list the town as a World Heritage Site in 1980. An Ouro Preto map poster turns the tangle of hillside lanes into a clear, graphic pattern that looks almost organic in black and white.
The main square sits on a saddle between hills, with its two historic buildings at either end. It is the point where many of the town's winding streets come together.
Churches stand at high points across the town, and the streets curve toward them. On the map, the pattern of lanes seems to gather around these sites.
Instead of a grid, the roads follow the lines of the hills, bending sharply and climbing in switchbacks. This gives the poster its flowing, irregular character.
