Te mapa
Ovar is in the district of Aveiro in northern Portugal, at the northern end of the Ria de Aveiro, a long coastal lagoon. The centre is a dense tangle of old streets around the main church and square. From there, roads lead out through farmland and small villages. One runs west to the beach at Furadouro on the Atlantic.
Ovar is known in Portugal for the painted azulejo tiles on many of its house fronts, and it is sometimes called a city-museum of azulejo. It is also known for its lively carnival and for pão-de-ló, a local sponge cake. On the map, the lagoon and its wetland channels create a soft, watery edge to the south and west.
An Ovar map poster shows a town between two worlds: the compact historic centre inland, and the lagoon, dunes and ocean coast to the west. The irregular old streets contrast with the long coastal line and the flat water, which makes a varied and interesting composition.
Around the main church, streets are narrow and irregular, many of them lined with tiled house fronts. On the map this core is a tight, detailed cluster.
The northern arm of the lagoon, with its channels and wetlands, fills the southwest of the map with water and soft, uneven shoreline.
A straight road runs west from the town to the Atlantic beach at Furadouro. It links the inland centre with the long line of the coast.
