Bairro Alto means upper neighborhood, and the name is literal. The quarter sits on a hill west of the Baixa, overlooking the lower city and the river. Unlike the medieval tangle of Alfama, it was laid out in the sixteenth century on a fairly regular plan. Long, narrow streets run in parallel, linked by short cross-lanes. It was one of Lisbon's earliest planned extensions.
The 1755 earthquake damaged the quarter less than the lower town, so much of its older layout survived. Today its lanes fill at night with small bars and fado houses. On its eastern edge, the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara looks across the valley to the castle, and the Glória funicular climbs steeply from Restauradores to reach it.
A Bairro Alto map poster shows a tight comb of streets, with long, thin blocks and almost uniform spacing. Around it, the slopes toward Chiado, the Bica funicular line and the descent to the Tagus loosen the pattern. It is a compact subject that rewards close cropping, where the narrowness of each lane becomes the design.
Long, narrow streets run side by side across the hilltop, forming thin rectangular blocks that give the print a strong, repeating texture.
This terraced viewpoint garden on the eastern rim of the quarter marks the edge of the hill and looks out across the valley to the castle.
The Glória and Bica funiculars climb straight up the slopes at the quarter's edges. On the map they appear as short, steep links between the lower and upper city.

Koteā ko Bairro Alto
Many people remember Bairro Alto for its evenings more than its landmarks: a narrow street, a particular bar, a song heard through a doorway. A print of its lanes is a quiet way to keep those evenings close.
Personalize the title and subtitle, perhaps with the date of a trip, and keep or change the coordinates line. Five styles are available, from Classic black and white to Blueprint, as $9 HD files or a printed poster.
