Te mapa
Ōzu lies east of Kumamoto city, on the gradually rising land that leads toward the Aso volcanic region. The town's map shows a mix of rural and suburban patterns: clusters of streets around the station and the old centre, long roads crossing farmland, and river valleys cutting down from the higher ground to the east. It is a place in transition between plain and mountain.
Ōzu is known for a stretch of the old Bungo Kaidō, the historic road from Kumamoto toward the east coast of Kyushu, which is lined with tall cedar trees. The area has also grown as a commuter and industrial town in recent decades, thanks to its position between Kumamoto and the airport side of the plain.
A Ōzu map poster shows that layering of old and new. Straight modern roads and small residential grids sit beside the long historic route, while field boundaries and rivers fill the spaces in between. The composition is balanced and understated, very much in keeping with the landscape around it.

Streams and rivers flow down from the higher ground to the east, carving shallow valleys that break up the pattern of fields and streets.
A denser cluster of streets around the railway station forms the most urban part of Ōzu, a clear focal point in the composition.
