Te mapa
Pamekasan is the capital of Pamekasan Regency, in the middle of Madura, the large island off the north-east coast of Java. It lies on the island's southern side, a short distance inland from the coast along the Madura Strait. For the surrounding villages it serves as a centre for trade, education and government.
On the map, the town is organised around a central square, with streets leading out in several directions and a fairly regular grid nearby. Beyond the core, housing gives way to rice fields, dry farmland and small settlements. The road that runs east–west along the island links Pamekasan with Sampang and Sumenep.
Madura is known for its batik, its bull races called karapan sapi, and its own language and culture, and Pamekasan is closely associated with all three. A Pamekasan map poster draws the town in quiet black lines, centred on its square and fading gently into countryside toward the coast.
An open public square marks the heart of the town. On the poster it is a clear focal point from which the main streets spread outward.
A main road crosses Madura from west to east through Pamekasan. It is the strongest line on the map and links the regency towns.
South of the town, farmland and villages stretch toward the shore of the Madura Strait, giving the composition an open, low-lying edge.
