Te mapa
Pampatar lies on the southeastern coast of Margarita Island, in the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta. The town wraps around a sheltered bay, and from above the curve of the shoreline is the defining line of the map. The older streets sit close to the water, while newer residential areas, hotels and shopping centres spread inland and along the coast.
Pampatar was one of the island's most important colonial ports. Its best-known landmark is the Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo, a seventeenth-century fortress built to defend the harbour, which still stands on the waterfront. Fishing boats continue to anchor in the bay, and beaches stretch along the coastline on either side of the town.
A Pampatar map poster balances sea and land. The curve of the bay creates a strong, open shape, the historic quarter forms a small, detailed cluster by the water, and the roads leading inland add structure. In black and white, the coastline stands out cleanly against the pale expanse of the Caribbean.
A curved, sheltered bay forms the town's waterfront, the reason Pampatar became a port and the clearest shape on the map.
The Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo sits by the water, and the streets of the old port gather around it in a compact grid.
Newer development extends along the shore and inland, with beaches, resorts and residential areas reaching toward neighbouring towns.
