Panchagarh is the main town of Bangladesh's northernmost district, in Rangpur Division, close to the Indian border on several sides. The Karatoya River runs near the town, and the surrounding land is a flat patchwork of paddy fields, villages and, increasingly, small tea gardens. Tea is a relatively recent crop in this area.
The district is known for something unusual in Bangladesh. On clear days, especially in autumn and early winter, the snow peaks of Kanchenjunga can be seen from its northern parts, around Tetulia. The town itself is compact, with a central market area and roads leading out to the villages.
