Papendrecht lies on the north bank of the Beneden-Merwede, directly across the river from Dordrecht, in the Dutch province of South Holland. The town grew along the dike, and on a map its oldest part still follows the water as a long ribbon of streets, while newer neighbourhoods fill the land behind it in planned blocks, cut through by canals and green spaces.
To the west the Noord river separates Papendrecht from Alblasserdam and Zwijndrecht, and to the north the polders of the Alblasserwaard open out in flat, rectangular fields divided by drainage ditches. A road bridge crosses the Merwede to Dordrecht, making Papendrecht part of the Drechtsteden, the group of river towns that grew up around shipping and shipbuilding.
