Te mapa
Parkersburg lies in western West Virginia, at the confluence of the Little Kanawha and Ohio rivers, across the water from Belpre, Ohio. The downtown grid sits in the point between the two rivers, with bridges carrying roads across each, while residential streets climb into the surrounding hills and spread along the valleys to the east and south.
The city prospered in the nineteenth century during the oil boom in the surrounding region, and many handsome houses from that period survive in the Julia-Ann Square Historic District. In the Ohio just downstream lies Blennerhassett Island, whose reconstructed mansion recalls the family entangled in Aaron Burr's ill-fated plans of 1806 and is now part of a state historical park.
A Parkersburg map poster places the rivers at the centre of the design. The broad Ohio sweeps along one side, the narrower Little Kanawha curves in to meet it, and the grid of old streets fills the space between, with bridges stitching the city to its neighbours across the water.
The Little Kanawha joins the Ohio at the edge of downtown, and the meeting of the two rivers forms the most distinctive shape on the Parkersburg map.
A long, narrow island in the Ohio just downstream, home to a state historical park and a reconstructed Palladian mansion reached by sternwheeler from the city.
The historic centre is laid out as a tight grid in the point between the rivers, with oil-boom era houses and civic buildings filling the streets nearby.

Koteā ko Parkersburg
Parkersburg people tend to define home by the rivers, the bridges and the view from Fort Boreman Hill. A map of the city suits a longtime resident, a graduate leaving the Mid-Ohio Valley, or anyone with family roots along this stretch of the Ohio.
