Te mapa
Paropo lies on the northern shore of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, and the lake is the first thing a map shows. A broad sheet of water fills most of the frame. The land rises sharply behind the shore, and the few roads follow the narrow strip between the slopes and the lake, curving with the terrain instead of forming any kind of grid.
Lake Toba fills the caldera of a supervolcano whose eruption, roughly seventy-four thousand years ago, was one of the largest known in Earth's history. Today it is the largest lake in Indonesia and the heartland of the Batak peoples. Settlements such as Paropo sit where the caldera walls leave room for farming, fishing and homes by the water.
A Paropo map poster shows the scale of that landscape in plain black and white. The lake reads as a calm open field, the shoreline curves around it, and the roads cling to the edge of the caldera. With so little street density, the map is mostly about the meeting of steep land and deep water.
The lake is so large that from this stretch of shore it fills much of the map, a wide open surface that makes the settlement look small at its edge.
The steep slopes of the old volcanic crater rise behind the shore and leave only a thin band of usable land, which is where the roads run.
Roads follow the curve of the lake instead of cutting inland, so the street pattern repeats the shape of the shoreline in thin lines.

Koteā ko Paropo
Lake Toba means a lot to Batak families, to travellers who have crossed it and to anyone drawn to volcanic landscapes. A map of Paropo keeps that shoreline in a simple form that works in a calm room.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, for example to add a family name or the date of a trip. There are five styles to choose from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files come in six print sizes.
