Te mapa
Passaic occupies a small area in Passaic County, New Jersey, on the west bank of the river that shares its name. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, and the map shows it: short blocks, narrow lots and closely packed streets fill nearly every part of the city, bounded by the river on the east and by neighbouring towns on the other sides.
The city grew as an industrial centre in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with large textile and rubber mills along the river and the railway lines. Many of those sites have since been redeveloped. Today Passaic is known for its diverse population, and its main streets are lined with small shops serving many different communities.
A Passaic map poster turns that density into a fine, intricate pattern. The river curves along one side, bridges cross to the towns opposite, and the grid shifts angle from one district to the next, showing how the city was put together piece by piece.
The river forms the city's eastern edge with a broad curve, and several bridges carry streets across to Bergen County on the far bank.
Short blocks and narrow lots cover almost the whole city, forming one of the most finely detailed street patterns among American cities of its size.
Street grids change direction from one neighbourhood to the next, the result of separate developments laid out over time and joined together.

Passaic has been a first American home for many families, and the map records the blocks where they settled. Its dense streets and river curve make a detailed print that rewards close looking.
