Pātan, also known as Lalitpur, sits directly south of Kathmandu, separated from the capital by the Bagmati River. The two cities now form one continuous urban area, but on the map the older core of Pātan remains distinct. It is a dense, irregular web of narrow streets and courtyards gathered around Durbar Square, with the former royal palace and a cluster of temples at its centre.
Pātan is one of the three historic royal cities of the Kathmandu Valley, and its Durbar Square is part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has long been known for its metalwork and fine craftsmanship. By tradition, four stupas attributed to the emperor Ashoka stand at the edges of the old town, loosely marking its cardinal points.
A Pātan map poster captures a city built on a human scale, where the street pattern grew around courtyards, shrines and stone water spouts over centuries. In black and white, the old core becomes an intricate texture of short lanes and enclosed spaces. The Bagmati forms a gentle curve to the north, while newer districts spread outward in looser lines.

Much of the old city is made up of bahals and other courtyard complexes linked by narrow passages, which gives the map an intricate, cellular pattern unlike a modern grid.
The river curves along the northern side of Pātan, marking the historic boundary with Kathmandu and appearing as a soft line crossed by several bridges.

Koteā ko Pātan
For Newar families, travellers who stayed in the old town and anyone who has studied the architecture of the Kathmandu Valley, Pātan means more than its size suggests. A map of its lanes is an elegant way to keep that intricate city close.
