Birgañj lies on the flat Terai plain in southern Nepal, directly on the border with India, across from Raxaul in Bihar. On a map the city is organised around the main road running north–south to the border crossing. Commercial streets and neighbourhoods grow outward from it on both sides, and farmland surrounds the city in every direction.
It is one of Nepal's most important trade gateways, and a large share of the country's imports passes through its customs point and its dry port. Because of that role, much of the city's layout has been shaped by movement. Market streets, transport depots and warehouse areas cluster near the routes leading to and from the border.
