Te mapa
Bettiah is the headquarters of West Champaran district in northern Bihar, on the flat alluvial plain that runs up to the Nepal border. Its street pattern is organic and tightly packed. Narrow lanes gather around an old centre, and main roads leave in several directions across fields. Water tanks and ponds appear throughout the town as small, clean shapes among the blocks.
The town was the seat of the Bettiah Raj, one of the large estates of the region, and it has had an old Christian community since a Capuchin mission arrived in the eighteenth century. The wider Champaran area is also where Gandhi led his 1917 campaign on behalf of indigo farmers, a turning point in India's independence movement.
A Bettiah map poster shows a town formed by walking distance and old routes rather than planning. The core is a close web of lanes. Around it the pattern loosens into scattered settlements and a patchwork of fields. The railway sweeps past on one side, and the whole composition has the quiet density of a North Indian district town.
A compact knot of narrow, irregular lanes forms the historic centre, dense enough to read almost as texture when printed at poster scale.
Water bodies of different sizes sit among the streets, small geometric pauses that give the map rhythm and mark the town's older quarters.
Main routes leave the centre like spokes across open farmland, linking Bettiah to villages and the border districts to the north.
