Paternò lies in the province of Catania, on the lower south-western slopes of Mount Etna, overlooking the valley of the Simeto river. On the map, the older part of town climbs a hill crowned by a Norman castle, with narrow, winding streets arranged around its slopes, while newer districts spread out below on more regular, gently sloping ground.
The castle, built in the eleventh century under Roger I, is the town's best-known landmark, a solid block of dark volcanic stone visible across the valley. The surrounding countryside is intensively farmed, and the area is known for its citrus groves, especially oranges grown in the fertile soils left by Etna's ancient lava flows.
