Penzberg lies in Upper Bavaria, in the rolling foothills between the lakes south of Munich and the first ridges of the Alps. For about a century it was a coal-mining town, and mining shaped its growth until the pit closed in 1966. Today the town is known above all as a major site of the pharmaceutical and diagnostics company Roche.
The town's layout reflects that industrial past. Instead of a single medieval core, it has grown in several neighbourhoods and former miners' settlements, joined by main roads. Around them, the landscape is typical of the Bavarian Alpine foreland: patches of forest, meadows and moorland, with small lakes and the Loisach valley not far away.
