Pingwu County lies in the north of Sichuan, in the mountains that rise between the Sichuan Basin and the Tibetan Plateau. On a map the county is overwhelmingly terrain: long ridges and deep valleys, where roads and settlements follow the rivers because there is little flat ground anywhere else.
The county seat stretches along the Fu River, its streets squeezed onto a narrow valley floor between the slopes. Beyond it, the Min Mountains hold some of the most important habitat for the giant panda, and reserves such as Wanglang protect large tracts of forest in the north-west of the county.
The town is also known for Baoen Temple, a well-preserved Ming-dynasty complex of halls and courtyards.
