Pinneberg lies just beyond Hamburg's northwestern edge in Schleswig-Holstein and is the seat of the district that shares its name. The small Pinnau river winds through town, and the railway to Hamburg, served by S-Bahn trains, makes a firm straight line across the map. Around the centre, residential streets curve and loop in the style of a commuter town that grew quickly after the war.
What sets Pinneberg apart is the land around it. The district is known for one of the largest tree nursery areas in Europe, and from above the outskirts break into long rectangular plots, hedgerows and field lanes.
