Te mapa
Pipili is a town in the Puri district of Odisha, on the main road between Bhubaneswar and the temple city of Puri. That location shapes its map. The highway runs straight through the town, and much of Pipili's life happens along it, with shops and workshops facing the road and residential lanes stretching behind them.
The town is best known for its appliqué craft, in which brightly coloured pieces of cloth are cut and stitched onto a base fabric to make canopies, umbrellas, lamps and wall hangings. The tradition is closely linked to the rituals of the Jagannath temple in Puri, and workshops selling appliqué work are a familiar sight along the main road.
A Pipili map poster reduces all that colour to line and shape: a strong highway, a narrow band of development along it, and flat, well-watered farmland around. The contrast is appealing. The black and white design gives a restrained counterpoint to a town famous for vivid textiles.
The main highway runs straight through Pipili and is the dominant line on the map, carrying pilgrims and travellers between the state capital and Puri.
Many craft shops and workshops line the main road, making the town's central stretch the heart of its well-known appliqué tradition.
Around the town, the flat farmland of coastal Odisha extends in every direction, crossed by small channels, village roads and field boundaries.
